Studying at Trinity

Orientation Luncheon 2009

Courses

Trinity Theological College offers three courses (Bachelor of Theology, Graduate Diploma of Divinity and Master of Divinity). These are offered through the Higher Education Provider Australian College of Theology (ACTh) whose courses are accredited by government departments and authorities across Australia as well as being recognised Internationally.

The courses are demanding for those who have not studied in the arts/humanities area before. We recommend those considering study undergo careful planning and preparations for their time as a student with us. Our lecturers and academic counsellors are available to all our students to assist them in their pursuits.

We recommend that students plan to spend a minimum of two to three hours of private study for each hour of class contact. Full-time students should not plan to work more than eight hours per week in either ministry or secular occupation.

Full-time students are expected and part-time students are encouraged to participate fully in the college life. This includes being part of pastoral care groups, attending Ministry Focus and participating in the Mission program and helping serve the wider college community for the regular events that are part of the college calendar.

Bachelor of Theology (BTh)

This course ensures a good preparation framework to lead to work in areas such as children, youth or women’s ministry, chaplaincy or leading a congregation as a pastor. It is suitable for a wide range of Christian service and is  standard requirement for most denominational accreditation bodies.

It is a three year full-time (up to 9 years part-time) degree at the level of an Australian University bachelor degree. This degree can be completed with students completing the Bible units with both biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek) one (Greek) or in English.

Students are required to begin in the Greek language stream with the summer pre-semester intensive. Following testing at the conclusion of the intensive students will be counselled as to whether to continue with Greek or to enrol in alternative units to meet the language requirement of this course.

Foundational First year units are offered every year. Second and Third year units are offered on a two year cycle.

Graduate Diploma in Divinity (GradDipDiv)

This course is a good foundation for those who are preparing for missionary service in a prior specialty or want to continue to work in an existing field of expertise. (e.g. teaching, medicine, engineering, nursing)

Mike

It is a one-year full-time (four year part-time) course for those who have completed a degree at an Australian University or equivalent.

The entry requirements are a completed non-theological degree from an Australian University or equivalent.  Consideration is also given as to the applicants maturity, motivation and likelihood of satisfactory completion of the academic requirements of the course.

The course is made up of first year units and provides a solid foundation in Bible and Church History.  Students can choose to study Greek language units LA004A/B to allow transfer into the Master of Divinity.

Trinity also offers to non-accredited distinctive units as extras for students who want to have an overview of Theology. These two units run for 1.5 hours each week for a semester each.

Students can now study this course part-time across 4 years by attending on Tuesday evenings. For 2009 the unit on offer on Tuesday evenings from 6:15 – 9:20 is OT501/502 Old Testament. Applications to study in semester 2, 2009 are now open.

For more details on the content of our courses please see our Course information book.

Master of Divinity (MDiv)

This course is an intensive and rigorous preparation for pastoral-teaching leadership or those who wish to prepare for further research for those with a prior tertiary degree in an area other than theology.

It is a three-year full-time (up to nine-year part-time) degree for those who have completed a degree at an Australian university or equivalent in a non-theological discipline. Consideration is also given as to the applicants maturity, motivation and likelihood of satisfactory completion of the academic requirements of the course.

The final year project (thesis) enables students to focus in detail on an area of Biblical, theological or ministry interest.

Students are required to study in the Greek language stream with the summer pre-semester intensive. Greek language is used for New Testament units in second and third year. Hebrew language is also available at the summer pre-semester intensive at the commencement of second year. Old Testament units can then be studied using Hebrew in the final year of study.
