From Restlessness to Rest
When Michelle first enrolled at Trinity, it marked a significant turning point—one shaped by years of questioning, quiet perseverance, and God’s steady, gracious leading. Now partway through a Bachelor of Theology, she reflects on how Trinity has not only deepened her understanding of Scripture, but also helped her rest more fully in God’s love.
Born and raised in East Malaysia, Michelle moved to Perth with her family at the age of 12. While she had grown up attending church and was baptised at a young age, she describes her high school years in Australia as a season of cultural confusion and spiritual restlessness. The mix of identities—Asian, immigrant, Christian—often left her feeling caught between worlds.
By her mid-20s, she found herself exhausted. Though still attending church regularly, life felt fragmented, and the gospel she’d heard since childhood seemed increasingly distant. But as she prayed through her dissatisfaction, long-forgotten truths from Sunday school began to return. God, in his kindness, started growing Michelle’s hunger to want more of him. That led to a dramatic season in her life where she rediscovered Jesus for who he truly is.
Working as an education assistant for several years gave Michelle a window into people’s lives—especially children and families navigating brokenness. It was fulfilling, but also revealed a hunger she hadn’t fully acknowledged: a desire to understand God’s Word more deeply, and to be able to share it with others.
“I realised I didn’t know the Word well enough to work with people using the Word,” she says. “I wanted more.”
During the pandemic she joined a Bible Study Fellowship group, and her thirst for theological depth only grew. A friend suggested she try a short course through Trinity at Night. Michelle took the plunge—still nervous, but curious. That small step became the beginning of a much larger journey.
Now studying a Bachelor of Theology full-time, she says studying at Trinity has given her more than just knowledge—it’s been a place of spiritual grounding and relational support. The College’s Pastoral Care Groups have been especially meaningful, offering weekly prayer, encouragement, and space to grow in ministry alongside peers and mentors. For Michelle, this sense of community was a key reason for committing to full-time study.
She describes her time at Trinity so far as a season of comfort and clarity. Through lectures, readings, and relationships, Michelle has come to understand the depth of God’s love in ways that feel personal and secure.
“His love is comforting. He gives me peace,” she says.
Trinity has also given her growing confidence to live as a Christian in a complex world. Michelle finds herself more rooted in Scripture and its promises.
“I have something more than what the world is saying. I have a place in his kingdom—because I have Jesus.”
Looking ahead, Michelle is passionate about serving in church ministry, particularly within her home church, Perth Chinese Christian Church. While she holds that calling with open hands, she’s trusting that the same God who led her to Trinity will continue guiding her forward.
She’s grateful for the ways Trinity has helped her grow—not just academically, but spiritually and relationally. For those considering theological study, her encouragement is simple: don’t hesitate.
“I’ve been so thankful for the community, especially through the Pastoral Care Group. It’s been a very valuable thing.”
Michelle would appreciate prayer as she continues her studies—particularly for focus and peace under pressure. Pray that she would keep her eyes fixed on Jesus through it all.
